Source Monitoring
In context of investigation, source monitoring focuses on how person sharing the information w/investigators came to “know” the information they provide.
The Source of ones memories.
Initiation

Psychological maltreatment
- Repeated pattern of caregiver behavior or incidents convey a child they are worthless, flawed, unloved, unwanted, endangered, or value only for others.
Spurning
- Verbal and non-verbal reject/degrading ex. Shamming/ridicule for normal emotions, belittling, degrading, rejection, public humiliation, singling out.
Terrorizing
- Threaten to physically hurt, kill, abandon, have child or love one put in dangerous situations ex. Threaten of loss, harm, or danger if expectations are not met.
Isolation
- Deny oppotunities for child to communicate/interact w/peers or adults inside or outside the home ex. Confiding an unreasonable limitations of child’s freedom of movement.
Exploiting/Corrupting
Caregiver encourages inappropriate behavior ex. Modeling, permitting, or encouraging antisocial or inappropriate behavior.
Denying Emotional Responsiveness
- Caregiver ignores attempts and needs to interact and show no emotion in the interactions ex. Failing to express affection, caring and love.
Mental Health, Medical & Educational Neglect
- Caregiver refuses to allow, or fail to provide treatment or needs for the child ex. Ignoring those needs
Maslow
- Human needs theory-human organism has certain needs to be met if it is develop properly ex. Basic needs, growth needs (cant do anything unless needs are met.)
Juvenile Court proceedings
- Judges are concerned more about treatment than punishment. ??
Forensic Interviews
- Interviews the child about the abuse they had gone through, goes off of memory and assist w/how to identify time.
Sexual Abuse

Characteristics of offenders & victims-
** MOST common by an ACQUANTANCE or SOMEONE THE CHILD KNOWS IN THE FAMILY.
4th Amendment-Exigent Circumstances
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures.
Exigent Circumstances: Right to interview children
1) The child is in harms way.
2) Compromise Investigation in some way.
Physical Abuse
*Non-Accidental physical injury. Bruises to severe fractures to death. Ex. Punching, beating, kicking, biting, shaking, throwing, stabbing, choking, hitting, burning, and other by parent or caregiver.
Confirmation Bias
Not going in with an open mind, already bias about what is going on
Substantiated
- Able to provide evidence of truth.
Unsubstantiated
- Has not been proven to be fact
