What is Confucianism?
A set of logical ideas about how people should act to make a more adapted society.
Mandate of Heaven
Established the idea that rulers must be just to keep the approval of the gods.
What is the Filial Piety?
Respect for parents, the attitude of respect influences and complete obedience to one parent during their lifetime.
Working hard to provide them with comfort materials: food, money and pampering.

Last imperial dynasty of China from (1644-1912) was overthrown by revolutionaries.

Expansion of European nations as empires.

Sort of “drug” very addictive, fought over and traded.

British smuggled opium from Indian colonies into Chinese ports against the Chinese government in 1839.

The trading system focused towards Americans and the Chinese.

Peace treaty ended the first opium war.
Treaty of Tianjin?
Freedom movement for Christian missionaries.
Taiping Rebellion?
Qing Dynasty fighting with religious conviction over regional economic conditions.

What were the causes and effects of forced trade with west China?
High Demand for Chinese tea, silk and porcelain in the British market. Transport of opium between Britain and China.
How did Confucianism impact China’s attitude towards foreigners?
Confucianism taught people to maintain their role in the social order. Chinese society valued hard work over education and work ethics.
Importance of family, respect towards the family unit of threat. manners, peace, different behaviours.
How did the opium wars impact internal stability in China?
Families torn apart by addiction breached Confucian. Productivity lowered due to addiction, and the Taiping rebellion.
Why is this period in Chinese history described as the ‘century of humiliation?
Starting in (1839-1949), loss of territory and loss of control over its environment. Opium war, china lost power. Treaties forced them into changing their trade system.
