chp 2 Flashcards
what is the brain doing
- reality is individual and collective “storying”
- brain is always trying to simplify info and make sense of nonsensical world
- it is impacted by how our senses work together; thus memories get stored and learning occurs
- occurs senses provide more info than our brains can handle (simple ways like selective attention to more severe ways of trauma flooding)
- too much info leave gaps for brain to manage, so it fills in gaps by matching to what is already known
- our brains only process fractions of what is in front of us
Brain review
the brain has the biggest “growing parts” by age 6 and then by late adolescence
- neuron growth spurts occur from back of brain to front
New childhood disorder
disruptive mood dysregulation disorder ( designed to pull children with extreme temper, rage attacks, and manic features out of bipolar disorder
Process to diagnose
- age
- signs/symptoms
- frequency
- duration
- impact
- rule out (what else could it be)
Intellectual disability
- often related to genetics (DS) or perinatal (fetal alcohol syndrome) or postnatal (TBI)
- deficits in general mental abilities (reasoning problem solving an planning)
- impairment significant enough to restrict personal independence and social responsibility
- ID can result genetically or from head trauma during development periods
- IQ measures are not reliable in lower ends (70 or less)
- levels of severity preferred ( mild, moderate, severe, profound across 3 domains: conceptual, social, and practical
Communication diorders
speech: inability or reduced ability to verbal messaging but not elated to other issues (cerebal palsy, deafness, TBI)
language: limited vocab and grammar not related to hearing loss or sensory impairment or other neurological condition
social communications: difficulties with interaction, social adjustments, storytelling, understanding verbal cues, limited social relationships/ some similarities with autism , but lack repetitive behaviors
Specific learning and motor
Pica
persistently eating stuff thats not food
Rumination
trouble swallowing and re-chewing food
Elimination: encopresis
potted trained but defecates in underwear or somewhere else
Elimination: Enuresis
urinates repeatedly in bed, underwear, other places
Autism Criteria
