chp 5 Flashcards
(36 cards)
Groups of similar cells with a common function.
Tissue
Major types of tissues in the body.
- Epithelial Tissue
- Connective Tissue
- Muscle Tissue
- Nervous Tissue
The study of the structure and function of tissues.
Histology
Covers body surface, cover and line internal organs, compose glands.
Epithelial Tissue
Widely distributed throughout the body.
Connective Tissue
Attached to bones, in the walls of hollow internal organs, heart.
Muscle Tissue
Found in the brain, spinal cord, nerves.
Nervous Tissue
Lacks blood vessels, cells readily divide, cells are tightly packed.
Epithelial Tissue
Mostly have good blood supply, cells are farther apart than epithelial cells, with extracellular matrix in between.
Connective Tissue
Able to contract in response to specific stimuli.
Muscle Tissue
Cells communicate with each other and other body parts.
Nervous Tissue
Has a free surface on the outside and basement membrane on the inside.
Epithelial Tissue
Function of Tissue: protection, secretion, absorption, excretion, filtration, diffusion, and sensory reception.
Epithelial Tissue
Thin, flattened cells.
Squamous
Cube shaped cell.
Cuboidal
Elongated/ Rectangular cells.
Columnar
Single layer of cells.
Simple
Two or more layers of cells.
Stratified
Appears layered but is not.
Pseudostratified
Single layer of thin, flat cells.
Simple Squamous
Found: Lining air sacs & capillaries. (LUNG)
Lines blood & lymphatic vessels.
Simple Squamous
Lines kidney tubules, thyroid follicles, ducts of some glands, covers ovaries.
Simple cuboidal
Single layer of cube shaped.
Simple cuboidal
Single layer of elongated cells.
Simple columnar
