Chp2 Radiation Safety Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is the Commanding Officer’s responsibility regarding radiation safety?
The Commanding Officer is required to protect persons not in MOD employment against risks to their health and safety arising from MOD work activities, including radiation safety.
What is the role of the Radiation Safety Officer?
The Radiation Safety Officer ensures appropriate risk assessments are produced for all work with ionising radiation and that these assessments are communicated to affected persons.
(KLP 13.09.01)
What does RADHAZ stand for?
RADHAZ is the acronym for electromagnetic radiation hazards.
What are the risks associated with radio and radar transmissions?
Radio and radar transmissions can cause ignition of electrically initiated
explosive devices,
permanent eye damage,
radio frequency burns, and
ignition of fuel or flammable
liquids and gases.
When should airborne radio transmitters not be operated?
Airborne radio transmitters should not be operated when personnel could suffer thermal effects, during fuelling operations, during loading/off-loading or arming/disarming of weapons, and in a hangar.
What precaution should be taken before functional testing of high frequency systems?
Always display warning notices around the aircraft before carrying out functional testing of the high frequency system.
(KLP 13.09.02)
What is chaff in the context of radar countermeasures?
Chaff is a radar countermeasure where aircraft spread a cloud of small, thin pieces of aluminium, metalized glass fibre, or plastic to appear as secondary targets on radar screens or swamp the screen with multiple returns.
What do most military aircraft have for self-defence?
Most military aircraft have chaff dispensing systems for self-defence.
What precautions should be taken regarding chaff?
You should ensure that you never get chaff on your skin, in your eyes, or allow it to enter the body via inhalation. Always wear the correct PPE as stated in the maintenance manual and COSHH/Risk assessment.
How is chaff released from the aircraft?
Chaff is released from the aircraft by the use of chaff dispensers, with the position varying from aircraft to aircraft.
What must be observed when the aircraft is on the ground?
When the aircraft is on the ground, all safety devices must remain in place in accordance with the aircraft maintenance manual.
What is the purpose of Infra-Red Countermeasure Decoys (Flares)?
The aim of infrared decoys is to present a target to a heat seeking missile that is more compelling than the aircraft.
What form do infrared decoys take?
Decoys are in the form of flares which emit intense heat energy, causing the missile guidance to transfer lock to the flare.
What must be strictly observed regarding flare danger areas?
Flare danger areas and safety precautions published in the relevant aircraft Hazard and Maintenance notes must be strictly observed whenever countermeasure flares are fitted.
What risks are associated with flares?
Flares can be inadvertently fired by static or induced electricity and can cause serious injury and damage to personnel and equipment due to their intense heat.
