A

Another name for a living thing

3
Q

What are living things made of?

A

Cells

4
Q

What are the characteristics of living things?

A

1) nutrition
2) respiration
3) excretion
4) growth
5) reproduction
6) movement
7) response

5
Q

What is nutrition?

A

Its the way in which living things get and use their food

6
Q

What is respiration?

A

The way living things get energy

7
Q

What is the chemical equation for respiration?

A

Food + oxygen —-> energy + carbon dioxide + water

8
Q

What is excretion?

A

The getting rid of the wastes made in cells

9
Q

Explain growth

A

Growth results from cells dividing (its a gradual process in which there is a gradual increase in the size o the organism)

10
Q

What is reproduction?

A

Its being able to produce new individuals of the same kind

11
Q

Movement:

A

All living things can move

12
Q

What is response?

A

Its the ability to react to changes in the environment

13
Q

What is classification?

A

Being able to sort things into groups

14
Q

What are the two main groups of organisms?

A

Plants and animals

15
Q

What are the uses of plants?

A
  • they produce food for themselves and other living things
  • provide shelter
  • provide materials (ie. linen, cotton, medicines, dyes)
  • take in CO2 -> reducing global warming
16
Q

What are vertebrates?

A

Animals with a backbone e.g. Frog, birds, humans

17
Q

What are invertebrates?

A

Animals with no backbone e.g. Spiders, snails, crabs

18
Q

What are the uses of animals?

A
  • provide food
  • provide materials (wool, leather)
  • reduce stress
  • sports (horse racing)
19
Q

What is a key?

A

A series of questions about the features of the organism you want to identify

20
Q

Look at page 8 of book for

A

Experiment in living things

21
Q

What do plants usually have?

A

Leaves, roots, a stem e.g. A rose
