Chpt 3 - amounts of substance Flashcards
(15 cards)
- One mole
the amount of a substance that contains 6.02 x 1023 particles
- Avogadro’s constant
6.02 x1023 mol -1 the number of particles in each mole of carbon -12.
- Amount of substances
a quantity to count the number of particles in a substances, measured in the mole.
- Molar mass
gives mass in grams in each mole of the substance.
- Molecular formula
number of atoms of each element in a molecules
- Empirical formula
simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound.
- Relative molecular mass
compares the mass of a molecule with the mass of an tom of carbon – 12.
- Relative formula mass
compares the mass of a formula unit with the mass of an atom of carbon – 12.
- Analysis
investigating the chemical composition of a substance
- Standard solutions
Solution of known concentration
- Molar volume
volume per mole of gas molecules at a stated temperature and pressure.
- Stoichiometry
balancing the numbers gibing the ration of the amount in moles, of each substance.
- Theoretical yield
maximum possible amount of product
- Limiting reagent
reactant that is not in excess and so will be completely used up first and stops the reaction.
- Atom economy
measure of how well atoms have been utilised
