Chpt. 5: Skeletal System Flashcards
(26 cards)
Appendicular Skeleton
Bones of the limbs and limb girdles that are attached to the axial skeleton
Amphiarthroses
A slightly movable joint
Axial Skeleton
The bones of the skull, vertebral column, thorax, and sternum
Bony Thorax
Bones of the thorax, including ribs, sternum, and thoracic vertebrae
Pelvic Girdle
Incomplete bony basin formed by the two coxal bones that secures the lower limbs to the sacrum of the axial skeleton
Periosteum
Double-layered connective tissue that covers and nourishes the bone
Shoulder Girdle
Composite of two bones, scapula and clavicle, that attach the upper limb to the axial skeleton
Skull
Bony enclosure for the brain
Diarthroses
A freely movable joint
Epiphysis
The end of a long bone
Intervertebral Disks
The disks of fibrocartilage between the vertebrae
Articular Cartilage
Cartilage that covers the articular (joint) surfaces of bones
Articulations
The state of being jointed
Cartilaginous Joint
Connected entirely by cartilage; allows more movement between bones
Compact Bone
Dense bone in which the bony matrix is solidly filled leaving only tiny spaces that contain bone cells
Diaphysis
The shaft or central part of a long bone
Short Bones
As wide as they are long. Their primary function is to provide support and stability with little to no movement
Epiphyseal Plate
Hyaline cartilage plate in the metaphysis at each end of a long bone
Fibrous Joint
A slightly movable joint where fibrous tissue or form of cartilage connect the bones
Flat Bones
Bones that aren’t bumpy such as those of the forehead (frontal)
Irregular Bone
Do not fit into any other category of bones. Unique.
Long Bones
Longer in length than width
Ligament
A short band of tough, flexible, fibrous connective tissue that connects two bones or cartilages or holds together a joint
Spongy Bone
Bone in which the spicules form a latticework, with interstices filled with embryonic connective tissue or bone marrow. Also called cancellous bone, spongy substance, trabecular bone.
