What was the process of Jesus’ crucifixion
-Jesus was sentenced to death by Romeo Govenor Pontinus Pilate, punishment by crucifixtion as it was Roman execution technique
-Process of execution:
-victim being layed on wooden cross, attached using nails and or rope
-cross would be lifted upright
-victim would be left to die often through asphyxiation
-death time fluctuated between a couple hours to days
-he forgave the guards who executed him and talked to one of the men he was executed with and promised one that he would join God in Heaven
-after six hours: ‘Jesus called out with a loud voice ”Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” When he had said this he breathed his last’-Luke 23:46
-one of the Roman Centurions in charge of the execution recognised that Jesus had done nothing wrong and praised God
What was the significance of Jesus’ crucifixion
-impacts Christians today as it means sin can no longer destroy their lives as God forgives those who ask
-that suffering is a part of life and God understands what it is like to suffer
Resurrection
-rising from the dead
-Jesus rising from the dead on Easter day an event recorded in all four gospels
-central belief in Christianity
Ascension
-40 days after the resurrection when Jesus returned to God in heaven
What was the significance of the resurrection and ascension
-shows the power of God over evil
-by accepting Jesus they can also be resurrected in some way (no need to fear death)
-assures them God will forgive their sins if they follow the teachings of Christianity (become closer to God)
-shows Jesus is with God paves the way for the coming of the holy spirit to provide comfort and guidance
-without resurrection there would be no Christian faith
