Q

Solutions to the problem of evil and suffering

A
  • Moral evil: the devil temps people (e.g. Adam and Eve); humans have free will, which they abuse and so hurt others.
  • Natural Evil: suffering is allowed as a punishment for wrong-doing; it is a test of faith to strengthen the soul, for example the story of Job; it is needed so that we can appreciate good, that acts as a balance.

Q

Interpretations of Genesis

A
  • Gensis is literally true - every word is the word of God; God dictated the book and it is totally correct
  • Genesis does contain truth but was not dictated - God inspired writers, so if there are any errors in the story then it was human error
  • Genesis was written by a person whose sense of God in the world inspired them to write. It was a man-made document
