Q

Comment on the parable about the Good Samaritan

A

On a road between Jerusalem and Jericó, a Jewish traveler has been robbed, beaten and stripped of his clothes and desperately needs help or he will die. First a priest walks by and then a Levite, both of whom should have stopped to help him as Holy people, although neither do.

Then a Samaritan, an enemy of the Jewish people, sees the man, stops, bandages his wounds, covers him in healing oil, gives him wine to drink and takes him to an inn on his donkey. He pays the innkeeper to look after him.

Q

Why is it not surprising that Jews expected miraculous signs?

A

So much of Israel’s history involved God doing miracles e.g. ten plagues in Egypt for Moses, parting of the Red Sea for Moses, feeding of the 5000.

If they could see miracles, they would know their saviour had arrived.

Q

All Christians believe in the afterlife when there will be a judgement day with God. Why is this important to how they live on earth?

A
  1. Christians believe all humans have a soul which lives on after death of the physical body.
  2. They believe that how they live in earth will impact what happens when they die.
  3. If they have followed God’s will they will have eternal life with God.
  4. If they have not followed God then their soul will go to Hell where they will experience eternal torment.
  5. All Christians therefore do lots of good works on earth to ensure that on judgement day they go to heaven with God.
40
Q

What is a strong Miracle?

A
  1. When the law of nature has been broken to produce it.

2. It is a super natural power

41
Q

What is a weak Miracle?

A

A rare, extraordinary, unusual, fortuitous, but not impossible event in which the normal laws of physics have not been broken.

42
Q

Give 2 examples of week miracles recently in the newspapers.

A
  1. An event like two Siamese twins being separated and surviving when they had a joined spine. This is a newspaper article claiming a miracle, but actually it is an advancement in surgical techniques.
  2. Poppy the 3 year old springer spaniel chased a seagull off a 300foot cliff and belly flopped into the sea. She survived although this was unlikely. This is a weak miracle and probably due to the way the dog landed such that the impact did not damage the internal organs.
43
Q

Do you think miracles are real?

A

No, just stories made up by people

44
Q

In the miracle of Jesus when he feeds the 5000, what was the problem?

A

Jesus has a crowd of 5000 people following him and his disciples up a hill when they sat down to speak. The people were following him as they heard he could carry out miracles and could heal the sick. As the day wore on, the people were very hungry……

45
Q

When the disciples told Jesus that their 5000 followers were very hungry what did he do?

A

He asked the disciples how much food they had available for the 5000 people.

46
Q

How much food did the disciples have to feed the 5000?

A

They managed to get 5 barley loaves and 2 fish from a young boy to feed everyone.

47
Q

What did Jesus do to the 5 barley loaves and the 2 fish?

A

He held them up and thanked God for them.

He then instructed his disciples to start to give out the food

48
Q

Did Jesus run out of food when his disciples kept handing it out to the 5000?

A

No. God had multiplied all the food so that there was enough for everybody.

49
Q

How much food was left over after the 5000 were fed?

A

There were 12 baskets full of left overs.

50
Q

Apart from the 5000 followers no longer being hungry what was the bigger message that Jesus was able to show?

A

The followers saw the miracle: 5 barley loaves and 2 fish were enough to feed the 5000.

This strengthened the followers faith in God by seeing God’s power it erased any doubts

51
Q

When the disciples asked Jesus how they would feed the 5000, did they show faith in Jesus?

A

No, they did not have faith, they did not think it was possible.

52
Q

Would the feeding of the 5000 be considered a strong miracle?

A

Yes, it defys the laws of nature. It is not possible to feed 5000 people with 5 barley loaves and 2 fishes.

53
Q

How could the strong miracle of the feeding the 5000 be only a weak miracle?

A

If the disciples had hid lots and lots of food in advance of Jesus arriving with the 5000 followers.

Or Jesus could have hid it himself

Or people could have brought their own food and they shared it because Jesus asked them to.

54
Q

How did the feeding of the 5000 show Jesus in good light?

A
  1. His power and authority over nature and his divine intervention
  2. Shows that he is concerned for both the physical and spiritual well being of his people
  3. It was a very large public demonstration that would be talked about widely.
  4. It was Jesus’ most impressive act

56
Q

In the Jesus calms the storm story, do the disciples have faith in Jesus when the storm causes their boat to be unstable?

A

Sickness, job loss, marriage problems, death of a loved one

59

What did the disciples think that Jesus was capable of after the miracle of calming a storm at sea?

A

They though he was capable of superpowers where he could control nature: the wind died down and the sea calmed on his words.

63
Q

What two examples do you know of where Jesus anda Moses controlled the seas through God - a supernatural power

A
  1. Moses: parted the Red Sea to allow the Hebrew slaves to makes their way to the Promise Land in Israel.
  2. Jesus: The miracle of the calming of the seas during a terrifying storm - ‘Quiet, be still’
64

Q

Describe what happens in the miracle of the Gadarene Swine also known as the Gerasene Demonic

A
  1. Jesus goes across the sea into the region of the Gerasenes.
  2. There, a man possessed by a demon comes out of the cave to meet him.

Joseph is told by a dream that he will have a son and he should name him Jesus. They are in Bethlehem and the wise men come and visit Jesus. The family have to leave because of King Herod. They go to Egypt and then to Nazareth. They do not go to Bethlehem because Herod’s son is living there

80
Q

Is Joseph the biological father of Jesus?

A

No, Jesus was created by divine intervention

81
Q

How do Matthew and Luke’s account of Jesus birth differ and are the same?

A

Both agree Mary and Joseph were the parents, that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, that he was created by divine intervention and Joseph wasn’t the father

Differ in that Matthew said that Mary and Joseph were told about Jesus birth in Bethlehem in the form of a dream and that they then headed to Egypt to escape king Herod,

Whereas,

Like said that Mary and Joseph were told about Jesus birth in Nazareth by the Archangel Gabriel and that they then headed to Bethlehem as part of a census and then returned to Nazareth afterwards.

A
  1. Mary Magdalen, one of Jesus’ followers, stood outside the tomb crying.
  2. As she wept, she saw the tomb stone had been rolled to one side. She bent over to look inside the tomb and saw 2 angels in white seated where Jesus’ body should have been.
  3. The angels asked Mary why she was crying.
  4. As there was no body there, she said, they have taken my Lord away and I do not know where they have put him.
  5. She turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but did not realise it was him.
  6. Jesus asked Mary, why are you crying, who are you looking for?
  7. Thinking he was the gardener, she asked him where he had put the body of Jesus.
  8. Jesus called her name and she recognised him.
  9. Mary tried to hold him, but he said do not hold me for I have not get ascended to God. Go and tell your brothers I am here.
  10. Mary went to tell the disciples the news that she had seen the Lord and he had spoken to her.
  11. The disciples are terrified, they are persecuted by the Romans and scared for their lives, they do not know whether to believe Mary or not.
  12. Jesus appears to the dis piles when they are all together in a locked room (for fear of the Romans). He still had the cuts on his hands and feet from being nailed to the cross and he still looked the same. He was not in the same form now as he could walk through walls. The disciples now believe he has risen from the dead and is the son of God.
  13. Jesus appears a few times to his disciples encouraging them to spread the word of God.
  14. He carries out his recorded miracle by causing the disciples to net a massive catch of fish.
  15. Jesus then continues his ascent to heaven leaving his disciples to continue to spread God’s word.

Q

Why is Easter Sunday important?

A
  1. Easter Sunday is a celebration of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. It is understood to have occurred on the 3rd day of his burial from his crucifixion at Calgary by the Romans.
  2. The resurrection of Christ is the foundation of Christian belief.
84
Q

Explain how a belief in Jesus resurrection might change an individuals view of the world.

A
  1. The resurrection of Christ is the foundation of Christian belief.
  2. Jesus had been rescued by God from death and given everlasting life.
  3. There is then hope for all people on earth that death is not the end and that heaven is possible.
  4. If you believe in the resurrection, you believe in everlasting life if you believe in God. Whether you go to heaven or hell on judgement day depends on whether you lead a good Christian life. You might therefore behave better and lead a good life on Earth. E.g helping you neighbour, sharing you wealth, worshipping God.
  5. You may feel that there is justice in this life on Earth if good people who are persecuted on earth are saved in death. There is therefore the hope that however terrible things are, they will definitely get better.
85

God’s purpose is the redemption of the world

86

87
Q

What can the book ‘ The Prince and the Pauper’ teach us about religion?

A

In the book, a poor boy Tom switched place with Prince Edward so they can both find out what each other’s life is like.

God comes down from heaven to experience life as a human (humanity).
He does this so that humanity can later experience life in Heaven with him if he can teach them to become true Christians on earth.

88
Q

Name 3 Christmas stories

A
  1. The Prince and the Pauper
  2. The Battle of Mon
  3. The Lighthouse
89
Q

Describe what we can learn from the battle of Mon in the Christmas stories?

A

During the battle of Mon at the outset of the 1st World War, many British men thought they saw a group of angels as archers like in the 100 years war. They became the angels of Mon. It was probably a hallucination, but it made them feel they were not fighting alone and that God was on their side, however unlikely this was. In the Christmas story, Christians have good reason to feel optimistic if God is on their side and it raised their spirits.

We learn from this story that God is always on the side of Christians.
