Christmas carol quotation Flashcards

Q

’‘______ as an oyster’’

A

'’Solitary as an oyster’’
The simile “solitary as an oyster” is used to describe Scrooge in “A Christmas Carol”12. Oysters have hard shells that protect themselves from predators, and this comparison suggests that Scrooge could be isolating himself from the people around him as a defense mechanism1. The simile also establishes Scrooge as a lonely man who is cut off from society, illustrating his meanness and miserliness as he greedily protects his wealth at the cost of human relationships.

solitary connotes to a prisoner in solitary confinement this can show that scrooge is by himself due to external factors.

A

’’ i wear the chains i forged in life’’
Marley wearing the chain has two meanings 1st is it is a warning for everybody else to not commit moral sins. The idea of being weighed down shows it is consistently punishing him.A chain is made from different links different components these symbolise all the sins and moral crime that was committed while being alive, also the verb forged expresses the idea of accountability Marley is admitting he is guilty for the sins he has committed he himself did it to himself no one forced him.

Q

'’The ______ white sheet of ____ upon the roofs … _____ snow upon the ground’’

A

'’The smooth white sheets of snow upon the roofs…dirtier snow upon the ground’’

the snow can symbolise class this quote can show the disparity between the class’s in society snow can symbolise the rich and and poor. The smooth white sheet of snow represents the rich upper class because it is smooth (no hardship) on top of the roof can show how the rich are looking down on the discolored snow which represents the poor people. The white snow and dirtier snow provides an contrast between the two classes and the pathetic fallacy in the quote about the snow reflect the events and the mood in the play.

This quote can be used for questions about class (rich and poor)
and the idea of change how in order for change the gap between the poor and the rich must be shortened
and can be used if you get a question talking about the weather.

Q

’‘___ is ignorance.____ is want’’

A

'’Boy is ignorance. Girl is want’’
Dickens uses children to tell his story because children reflect the most vulnerable group in society (if there was an evacuation children are evacuated first) however it is children that appear to be ignored. the boy and the girl represent the poor working class the youth of the poor working class. Ignorance is the idea that you are oblivious you have no clue about the suffering that other people are going through or you do know about the suffering but you don’t care. And this is exactly how society was built. This is the fruits of capitalism as capitalism is the belief of everyman for themselves so if someone is poor it is there fault.

Why is the quote in two short sentences. because much more emphasis created when it is in two sentences because it sounds like facts.
and it shows there is not much else that these young children have going on there are neglected and isolated.

this quote can be used to answer questions about responsibility. and the problems deep rooted in society

'’I will not___ out the lessons that they _____!’’

A

’’ I will not shut out the lessons that they teach!’’

The first person pronoun ‘I’ shows that scrooge takes full accountability and imperative also shows he is holding himself to account as the spirits were holding himself to account and shows the change is working and this quote is good for questions about responsibility.

Also ‘shut out’ contrasts with the oyster scrooge was once described as it shows the oyster has been smashed scrooge is not going to shut up but shout out from his cage.

Q

'’The ___ within him, froze his old _____.’’

A

'’The cold within him, froze his old features’’
this quote is from the beginning.
the symbolism of the cold represents the negativity that scrooge had he was so evil and nasty it reflected on his face. The cold completely froze him, when you put a body in a freezer everything in or body stops so before he met the ghost he was a dead man walking he was the pinnacle of upper class. if something is frozen you must defrost it to make it alike again and who does this to scrooge the ghosts.scrooge really epitomizes the damage a capitalist society does.
good quote to talk about redemption, capitalism and the supernatural.
