chromatography Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is chromatography?
A technique to separate components of a mixture using mobile and stationary phases.
What is the mobile phase in chromatography?
A liquid or gas that moves through the stationary phase carrying sample components.
What is the stationary phase?
A solid or liquid fixed in place that interacts with sample components to aid separation.
On what basis are components separated in chromatography?
Their differing affinities for the stationary and mobile phases.
What determines the distance a component travels?
Its relative affinity for the mobile vs stationary phase.
Types of chromatography based on interaction?
Partition, adsorption, ion-exchange, molecular sieve, affinity.
Types of chromatography based on physical state?
Liquid-liquid, gas-liquid, etc.
What type of chromatography is paper chromatography?
Liquid-liquid partition chromatography
