Q

what is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

A

related disease of the lungs
You can have one without the other but not the other way around
80-90% of all cases result from smoking

Q

what is emphysema

A

chronic disease which affects the ability of the patients lungs to exchange gasses
damages and destroys lung tissue
air becomes trapped in the lungs
can be from chronic infection/irritation of the branchial tubes

7
Q

what is the progression of emphysema

A

comes on gradually
likely experience several bad colds each winter
cough persists between colds & becomes chronic
shortness of breath on exertion in morning or evening (or both)
short walk may bring on an attack
interference with the passage of blood through the small blood vessels of the lungs

Q

what is chronic bronchitis

A

inflammation of the airways in your lungs that leaves them irritated
Irritation leads to increased production of mucus
Mucus blocks the airway
result = coughing, spitting, work hard to breathe

12
Q

what is popcorn lung

A

a disease that results in obstruction of the smallest airways of the lungs (bronchioles) due to inflammation and subsequent healing process that causes a build-up of scar tissue
Thick scar tissue can block the bronchioles air from passing through the body
over time = respiratory failure

a relatively uncommon (….but that’s starting to change) chronic disease that worsens over time

15
Q

what are the symptoms for popcorn lung

A

Shortness of breath
wheezing
coughing not caused by a cold or asthma, with or without mucus
Fatigue, fever or night sweats
symptoms get worse over time and can flare up during exercise or exertion

16
Q

what are the treatments for popcorn lung

A

corticosteroids such as prednisone, to reduce inflammation
using an inhaled medicine such as albuterol to open bronchioles
Suolements oxygen raise blood oxygen levels
antibiotics
rare cases when the lung damage is life-threatening = lung transplant

17
Q

have do most types of e cigarettes have

A

A cartridge, tank or pod that hold s liquid (can be refillable)
heating element for turning the liquid into breathable particles
A battery to power the heading element
power or control button
some are activated by sensors when you inhale)
A mouthpiece to breath in the aresol

18
Q

what is in the e liquid juice in a vape

A

flavoring
Nicotine
propylene
carcinogens
acetaldehyde
formaldehyde
acrolein, diacetyl and diethylene glycol
heavy metals
nickel, tin, lead and cadmium
Tiny particles that can get deep into your lungs

19
Q

what are the health effects of vaping

A

Reduced saliva= increased bacteria
coughing
Shortness of breath
eye irritation
Headaches
dry and irritated mouth and throat
Nausea

20
Q

why are some cases of vaping being linked to popcorn lung decreasing

A

Incidence of cases is decreasing slowly within the removal of diacentyl in some e cigarettes

21
Q

what is talipes

A

a congenital deformity of the foot, sometimes resulting from intrauterine constriction and characterized by unilateral or bilateral deviation of the metatarsal bones of the forefoot
treatment

22
Q

what is cleft palate and cleft lip

A

1 in 700 newborns
Can both occur on one side (unilateral) or both sides
because lip and palate develop separately, and infant can be born with cleft lip, cleft palate, or both
Genetic and environmental

23
Q

what is the difference between cleft lip and cleft palate

A

cleft lip: the separation of the two sides of the lip
cleft palate: an opening on the roof of the mouth

24
Q

what are genetic of inherited diseases

A

Transmitted from one or both parents at conception
formed by mutation of normal genetic material at a very early stage of cellular replication
Abnormial number of chromosomes
mutation can be found on:
non-sex chromosomes
sex chromosomes

25
what is cystic fibrosis
inherited disease that affects sodium channels in the body and causes respiratory and digestive problems Affects the mucus and the sweat glands most common fatal hereditary disorder affecting Caucasians
26
how many people have cystic fibrosis
estimated that 1 in every 2500 children born in Canada have CF 60% are diagnosed within the first year of life, 90% by age 10 Only %40 of children live beyond the age of 18 average life span for those who live to adulthood is 30-33 years
27
when is cystic fibrosis diagnosed
usually diagnosed when child fails to thrive: Poor growth frequent foul-smelling stools Chronic coughing/ wheezing recurrent pneumonia
28
what happens in the lungs in cystic fibrosis
build up of thick mucus makes it difficult to clear bacteria and leads to cycles of infection and inflammation, which damage the lung tissue
29
what happens in the digestive tract in cystic fibrosis
there is an absence of pancreatic enzymes required to breakdown and absorb fats
30
what is sickle cell disease
inherit a gene for an abnormal form of hemoglobin associated with crescent-shaped RBCs Limits oxygen transport capabilites RBCs have difficulty passing through small blood vessles
31
What happens when sickle shaped RBCs block vessels?
Less blood can reach that part of the body tissue does not receive normal blood flow --- eventually becomes damaged
32
what is the average life expectancy for sickle cell disease
mid 40s
33
what are some complications with sickle cell disease
anemia jaundice Formation of gallstones lung tissue damage pain (arms, legs, chest, abdomen) stroke priapism damage to organs
34
what is klienfeltyrs syndrome
Y sex chromosome from father comings with 2 X chromosomes from mother also known as XXY syndrome
35
when does klinefelters syndrome develop
born with, but usually presents at puberty if later than puberty, then usually mild
36
what is male hypogonadism
Lack of testosterone result: testicles do not work correctly do not produce testosterone
37
what are some features of Klinefelters syndrome
Delayed puberty impotence reduced facial hair reduced muscle power and stamina personality adjustment problems change in body shape gynecomastia osteoperosis depression tiredness Loss of libido
38
what are treatments for klinefelters syndrome
testosterone replacement surgery
39
what is turners syndrome
chromosomal condition that exclusively affects females Cause: complete or partial absence of one of the two X chromosomes diagnosed: blood test
