descriptive social norm (a belief of the actions of others in a community that drives a certain behavior)
prosocial behavior
aim
to see if social influence could be manipulated to have an effect on reusing towels in a hotel
method
researchers placed 2 types of cards randomly in 190 hotel rooms
- 1: “help save the environment” and encouraged to reuse the towels
-2: “join your fellow guests in helping to save the environment, almost 75% of our guests who are asked to participate in resource saving do reuse their towels more than once”
results
1 = 35% reused
2 = 44% reused
conclusion
using the strategy of consensus by making people aware of descriptive social norms can be used to promote prosocial behavior
