Circular motion formulas and designs Flashcards

Q

What is angular velocity?

A

Angular velocity is the rotation rate of an object during its circular motion. It is the time rate at which an object revolves or rotates around an axis.

When objects travel in circular paths, it can be convenient to measure the angle of rotation in a given time.

Q

What are the standard units for angular velocity?

What is the formula for angular velocity? (There are two)

A

Angular velocity is symbolised by a weird-looking W sign. It is also measured in RADIANS PER SECOND. (rads^-1)

ALWAYS CONVERT DEGREES INTO RADIANS PER SECOND BY MULTIPLYING π (pi) /180

Angular velocity = Δangle / Δtime

It is ALSO found through:

V = W x r

velocity = angular velocity x radius
Angular Velocity (W) = Velocity / Radius

Q

Is the centripetal force the net force? True or false and explain why.

A

True, when dealing with circular motion, Centripetal Force will ALWAYS BE THE NET FORCE

centripetal force is the net force because it’s the difference between the inward force needed to keep an object in circular motion and any outward forces (like inertia) that might try to make it move in a straight line.

Q

What is the formula for centripetal acceleration?

A

a = v^2 / r

Centripetal acceleration = velocity squared over radius

Q

What is the general formula for finding the speed of an object in a circular motion?

A

because speed = distance / time

Therefore, velocity = 2π r / T

velocity = 2π x radius / Time

If given the frequency, make sure to find the period and use that period, because it is the time taken for one revolution.

Rmbr: Frequency is in Hz, and it is the number of rotations in one second. We need to find the time it takes for ONE ROTATION

Q

What is the formula for centripetal force?

A

Fc = mv^2 / r

Centripetal Force = mass ax velocity squared divided by the radius
