Circulatory pathways Flashcards
(26 cards)
Left side of the heart pumps blood into what circuit
systemic circuit
right side of the heart pumps blood into which circuit
pulmonary circuit
characteristics of the pulmonary circuit
short and low pressure
characteristics of the systemic circuit
much longer and has higher resistance
Major branches off the ascending aorta
R and L coronary arteries
Major branches off the top aortic arch
brachiocephalic trunk, L common carotid artery, L subclavian artery
Major branches off the descending aorta
all other systemic arteries
Is blood oxygenated or deoxygenated in the pulmonary trunk
carries oxygen-poor blood from the right ventricle to the lungs
Is blood oxygenated or deoxygenated in the pulmonary veins
carry oxygen rich blood from the lungs to left atrium
What is the function of coronary circulation? Where do the coronary vessels exist on the surface of the heart?
exists in the epicardium
they are the functional blood supply to the myocardium
Left coronary artery
serves the left side of the heart
Anterior Interventricular Artery (Left Anterior Descending Artery) —Left coronary artery—
follows the anterior interventricular sulcus, supplies blood to the anterior walls of both ventricles + the interventricular septum
Circumflex artery (left coronary artery)
supplies the left atrium and the posterior wall of the left ventricle
Right coronary artery
serves the right side of the heart
Right Marginal Artery (right coronary artery)
supplies the myocardium of the lateral right side of the heart
Posterior Interventricular Artery (right coronary artery)
supplies the apex of the heart and the posterior ventricular walls
Complete blockage of a coronary artery leads to tissue death
Myocardial Infarction
When is the myocardium perfused – during ventricular systole or diastole?
ventricular diastole
anastomosis
“cross-connection between adjacent channels”
three major venous tributaries to the coronary sinus
Great Cardiac Vein
Middle Cardiac Vein
Small Cardiac Vein
Great Cardiac Vein
from the anterior interventricular sulcuus
Middle Cardiac Vein
from the posterior interventricular sulcus
Small Cardiac Vein
from the right inferior margin
coronary sinus
cardiac veins merge to form the coronary sinus and drains into the right atrium
