What is a covenant?
It is a two sided promise/agreement between God and his people through Abraham.
What did God promise Abraham?
God promised Abraham that he would have many people and that he would protect him and give him land.
What did Abraham promise?
He promised that all boys would be circumcised after 8 days.
What are the roles in circumcision?
The mum is not allowed in the room, kvater who is a male friend or family member which brings in the baby into the room where the circumcision occurs.
What’s the Mohel?
The baby goes on to the Mohel after being circumcised and the Mohel puts the baby on the chair of Elijah, then on to Sandek’s lap on a cushion. The Mohel is religiously and surgically trained.
Who does the circumcision?
The Mohel is trained in circumcision and cuts off the foreskin.
What role does the father do?
The father reads a benediction.
What happens after the father reads a benediction?
The Mohel blesses the baby with wine, a drop for the baby and the mother. Given by the Sandek.
What is a reason it is good to continue circumcision?
It is a sign that the child is a part of the Jewish community tradition. To stop circumcision is to break the covenant with God.
What is a reason that is is bad to continue circumcision?
The baby might not want it when they are older and the operation has risks as any operation would have.
What’s the sandek?
The sandek is the grandfather who is the trusted person to carry the baby after being circumcised.
