Domestic Policy
How the U.S handles issues affecting our own country. This includes things like health, education, and taxes
Foreign Policy
How the U.S handles issues involving other countries. This includes things like trade and national security.
Examples:
1). Secretary of state - president cabinet who leads state department; is in charge of foreign policies
2). Ambassadors - people who represent the U.S to foreign countries; use diplomacy to build connections
3). Embassy - official headquarters for U.S diplomats and government representatives who serve in other nations
National interest
Goals the government sets of creating policies. Examples are protecting U.S security, protects Americans in other nations, encourages trade, promotes international peace, humanitarian efforts, Economic success, and spreading democracy in free-market
Intergovernmental organizations
Organization whose members are foreign, has a main goal of promoting peace and helping societies abroad thrive
Examples of Intergovernmental organizations
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)- befriends nations to help defend against attacks
WTO (World Trade Organization)- develops free trade
World Court- protects nations against war crimes, genocides, etc
UNICEF- Gives aid to mothers & children
Non-governmental organizations
Organizations whose members are individuals whose plan is to help humanitarian aid
Ex. Red Cross/Red Crescent, and doctors without borders
U.S Conflict Response (Ways U.S responds to international conflict)
1.) Diplomacy- U.S uses negotiation and communication to solve conflict
a) Cuban missile crisis- Soviet Union sends nuclear weapons to Cuba
b) Ira Hostage Crisis - U.S citizens in Iran are taken hostage. U.S negotiates their release
2) Declare War- Congress, NOT the President must approve a declaration of war
WWl (1914-1918)
U.S didn’t choose sides until Germany sank the Lusitania ship containing U.S passengers, which also led Germany to send a telegram asking Mexico to attack
WWll (1939-1945)
Germany, Italy, and Japan were called Axis Powers. Japan bombed the Pearl Harbor navy base in Hawaii. U.S declared war on the Axis powers
Korean War
U.S tries to stop Communist North Korea from invading South Korea
Bay of Pigs
U.S government fails its attempt to support Cuban nationals overthrowing their communist government
Vietnam war
U.S tries to stop Communist North Vietnam from taking over South Vietnam
Gulf War l
Iraq invades Kuwait. The U.S uses the military, alongside the UN to kick them out
