Democracy
Rule of the people
Representative Democracy
Citizens electing representatives to make laws on their behalf.
Direct Democracy
Citizens meet together to make laws for their country
Liberal Democracy
Certain values that are deemed extremely important to be upheld.
Some include:
* Freedom of Speech
* Freedom of movement
* Freedom of assembly
* Freedom of religion
* Right to a fair trial
3 levels of government
Federal, State, Local
what does Federal do?
- In charge of things such as; immigration, trade, defence
What does state government do?
- In charge of things such as; education, transport, healthcare
What things does the local council do?
- In charge of things such as; rubbish collection, pet control,
3 branches of power
- Legislation
- Creates the law
- Judiciary
- Interprets the law
- Executive
- Enforces the law
Parliamentary party
A political party that has representation in parliament.
Coalition
When two or more parties join together, to create a bigger group and gain more power.
Minor Parties
Parties with a small number of people elected.
Party meetings
Held during sitting weeks and parties decide how they are going to work as a team.
Democratic Values
Beliefs and ideals held by our society as a democracy.
Examples of Democratic Values
DEMOCRATIC VALUES:
- Respect
- Equality
- Fairness
- Freedom
Participation
The way good citizens contribute or take part in society.
Ways of participation
Ways they participate:
- Voting in elections/referedums
- Serving on jury
- Paying taxes
Rights and Responsibilities
The entitlements and duties as citizens
Rights
Ensures we are able to have a say in the way our country is run and treated fairly in the process
Civic Responsibilities
Ensures we contribute to our society to keep going as a strong democracy
Westminister System
Parliament consisting of 2 chamber/houses, with members elected by the people to make laws on their behalf.
Upper house (senate)
- members
- Each state is represented by 12 senators
- Territories are represented by 2 senators
Upper house (senate)
-purpose
The senate is the house of review
–> Checks and holds the government of day for their actions
- represent the interests of their state/ territory
Lower house (House of representatives)
- purpose
- To form government
- Represents the interests of their electorates
