What are rights
A right is an entitlement to be treated in a particular way.
What rights do we have in Australia?
‘5 Express Rights’
Freedom of religion, trial by jury, compensation for acquired property, residential non- discrimination, interstate trade and commerce
How are rights Protected
Rights are protected by legislation. It is illegal to discriminate anyone based on personal characteristics.
Why rights might have limits/boundaries
The limits/boundaries on our rights is imposed laws that prohibit discrimination
Discrimination
Treating someone differently or unfairly because they are different from yourself and society.
House of Representatives
Has 150 members elected every 3 years.States with larger populations have more members
Senate
Has 76 members. Every state has 12 senators regardless of size/population

Electorate Role
When not sitting members work in there electorate helping citizens, visiting schools etc
Parliamentary Role
During sitting weeks members perform parliamentary duties including voting on bills, working in issues etc
Statute Law
Is made by the parliament. Bills must be passed by a majority of votes.
Common law
Is made by the judges in courts. It is based on precedent
Delegated Law
Is made when the parliament delegates the power to make laws to a minister or Goverment department
