A

The three organs of the government are -

  1. legislature (Divided into the Lok Sabha, lower house and the Rajya Sabha, upper house),
  2. The executive (Consists of the president, Vice president and Prime Minister)
  3. The judiciary (Consists of the supreme court and the magistrate court)

A

The job of the legislature is to make laws/rules. The parliament also called the great hall of people is a place where elected representatives get together and discuss/vote on laws. The parliament consists of lok Sabha, lower house and the Rajya Sabha, the upper house

What is the Lok Sabha?

A

The Lok Sabha is an elected house of the parliament. It is based on the British lower house. The house has 552 members and is elected for 5 years. Members are directly elected by citizens. The Lok Sabha gets dissolved every 5 years. The members are called MP

What is the Rajya Sabha?

A

The Rajya Sabha is also known as the British upper house. In the Rajya Sabha, the members are not directly elected by the people but are elected by representatives of the parliament of the members of the Lok Sabha. The Rajya Sabha has around 250 members and 12 are nominated by the President as recognition of contribution in some sphere of life. They are elected for a term of 6 years with 1/3 of the members retiring every two years.

A

The executive government consists of The President, Vice president, Prime minister, The cabinet minister. Its responsibility is to pass on laws made by the legislature. The legislative and executive governments are dependent on each other.

How does a Bill become a law?

A

A bill is an initially proposed law and both houses have to approve of the bill, after that, it will go to the president (Minister at the state level) to become a law. In the first reading, the bill is read and presented in front of the house. The second reading, it is discussed in detail in many aspects. In the third reading, it is voted on by the members and recommended to the next house.

What are the types of Lists?

A

The 3 types of lists are:
Union list - Matter discussed by members of the parliament
State list - Items discussed by the state government and legislative assembly
Concurrent list - Discussed by state & centre, once passed by parliament becomes applicable to all citizens.

What is the role of the President

A

Head of the executive. Nominated by representatives from parliament and then voted on by parliament and the state legislature. Appointed governors and PM is occupied by Cheif minister.

He is the stand-in president. Is not sure that the vice president will become president. Serves as chairman of Rajya sabha and presides over the house. Elected for 5 years. At the state level governor is the head. The governor is elected by the president and the PM

What is the role of the Prime Minister

A

The PM serves as the supreme leader of the state. Head of the executive. Most executive powers are exercised by him/her. Acts as an advisor for the president and leader of the council of ministers
