What is Authoritarianism?
The belief that people should obey the rules with no freedom to act as they wish.
Authoritarian regimes often limit personal freedoms and maintain strict control over the populace.
What are the two types of Democracy?
- Direct Democracy: Citizens directly vote on everything.
- Representative Democracy: Citizens elect representatives to vote for them.
Define Fascism.
Strong nation, strong leader, crush the opposition.
Fascism often involves dictatorial power and forcible suppression of opposition.
What is Communism?
Classless society, shared ownership, no private properties.
What is Oligarchy?
Rule by the few, for the few.
Define Aristocracy.
Ruled by the best, often the wealthy elite.
What is Theocracy?
Rule by religious leaders, based on religious law.
What characterizes a Dictatorship?
Total power ruled by one person.
What is Civics?
Civics is the study of the duties and rights of citizenship.
Define Government.
A system that is made up of people and institutions in order to run a country.
Who is Thomas Jefferson?
Author of the Declaration, 3rd U.S. President, advocate for individual liberties.
What are the ideas of John Locke?
Known for his ideas on natural rights (life, liberty, and property) and limited government.
What did Thomas Hobbes advocate for?
A strong central government to maintain order.
What is the Divine Right of Kings?
The belief that a monarch’s authority comes directly from God.
What is the Magna Carta?
A historic document from 1215, limiting the power of the English monarch and establishing certain rights.
What is Canada’s system of government?
Canada has a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy governed by a Parliament, Prime Minister, and Cabinet.
What is the Charter of Rights and Freedoms?
Enacted in 1982, it protects Canadians’ rights and freedoms, including:
* Fundamental Freedoms
* Democratic Rights
* Mobility Rights
* Legal Rights
* Equality Rights
* Language Rights
* Minority Language Educational Rights.
Explain Authoritarianism.
A government type where power is concentrated in a single leader or small group, with little to no political freedom. Key features include:
* Centralized power
* Limited freedoms
* Lack of free elections
* Control over society
* Use of force to suppress dissent.
What is Public Law?
Deals with the government and the public, governing society as a whole. Examples include:
* Criminal law
* Constitutional law.
What is Private Law?
Deals with relationships between individuals or organizations. Examples include:
* Contract law
* Tort law.
