Activist
A person that takes action to make a change, or stop a change, in society. It can be trying to make a government change its laws, or trying to make people change what they do.
Boycott
A form of protest where the protesters do not buy a product or give money to a company. Instead of buying a certain product, they might also buy another, very similar product from a different company.
Brown vs. the Board of Education
A Supreme Court Case which ruled unanimously in 1954, that racial segregation in public schools violated the 14th Amendment to the Constitution.
Civil Disobedience
The active refusal to obey certain laws, demands and commands of a government, without resorting to physical violence.
Civil Rights Movement
A social movement in the United States. The goal was to gain equal civil rights for African-American people.
Desegregation
The process of ending the separation of two groups, usually referring to races.
Integration
In the most general sense, may be any bringing together and uniting of things: the integration of two or more economies, cultures, religons.
Little Rock 9
A group of African American high-school students who challenged racial segregation in the public schools of Little Rock, Arkansas.
Lynching
The illegal hanging execution of a person, by the people of an area without the use of a court trial.
March
A form of protest where a large group of people gather ad walk together. They usually carry signs and may sing songs or recite chants.
Protest
An event in which people gather to show disapproval of something. There are several forms of protest, they can be both violent and nonviolent.
Riot
A form of protest where people take pat in violents and uncontrolled public behavior. Often there is looting and destruction.
