What did the Missouri Compromise say about slavery?
Slavery would not be allowed north of the lattitude line 36’30’

How did the Underground Railroad work?
Opponents of slavery used homes as safe stations with food, shelter and money.

About 3000 people, including conductors who guided slaves.

To 14 Northern States and Canada.
What caused the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854
Kansas and Nebraska wanted to join the Union but disagreed on slavery.
What did Stephen Douglas propose?
“Popular Sovereignty” - let people in each state vote on slavery.
What did the proposal do to the Missouri Compromise line?
It ended the 36’30’ line rule and allowed slavery to expand in the North-west.
What happened in Kansas and Nebraska after the act?
Violence broke out between pro- and anti- slavery settlers - called ‘Bleeding Kansas’

They were abolitionists who saw slavery as morally wrong.

Land in the West for free white farmers, not slave plantations.

A transcontinental railroad to aid economic growrth.
Why did the South fear the Republican Party?
They believe Republicans wanted to abolish slavery entirely.
Why was Westward expansion important to slave owners?
It was seen as essential for the future of slavery.
What did Abraham Lincoln (R) believe about slavery?
It should not expand into new territories and remain in the South.
What did John Breckinridge (SD) believe about slavery?
Slavery in new territories should be protected by law.
