A

The economy in the north was industrialized while in the south it was agricultural and so they needed slaves.

Northern states wanted the new states created from the western territory to be “free states” while the South wanted them to be “slave states.”

A

Nat Turner led a revolt against plantation owners.

Abolitionists campaigned to end slavery

Harriet Tubman made a secret route that escaped slaves used to get to the north (called the Underground Railroad.)

John Brown attacked the arsenal at Harper’s Ferry to try to start a slave rebellion.He was captured and hanged.

Some southern states succeeded (left) the union to form the “Confederate States of America.” Virginia joined them.
