What is history?
History is the chronological study of mans past events and relating it to date

What is a Civil War
It is a war that involves citizens of a given state or country fighting amongst themselves

What mistakes did Charles the First make? (5)
- He married a catholic woman
- He was a spendthrift
- He introduced the ‘ship money’ tax
- He didn’t consult parliament in his 11 years of rule
- He appointed William Loud
Who were the Puritans?
They were protestants who believed in the teaching of the bible. They believe that the church should be simple and should follow the teachings of the bible.
What did the Puritans hate? (2)
- The introduction of statues, music and stained glass windows
- They hated the power of the bishops and priests because many of them were corrupt
When did the first civil war start and end?
1642 - 1646
When did the second civil war start and end?
1648 - 1649
Where did the first major battle take place? And what happened?
Edge Hill. Neither side won but many people died including Sir Edmond Verney
Where did the battle between the royalists and the Scottish Army take place? And what happened?
Moister Moor. The royalists army was badly beaten and fled to hide.
What was the difference between Oliver Cromwells Army from Ruperts Army?
- Cromwell picked men who were god fearing and committed
- He took good care of his army and paid them well
- He was strict and disciplined them
- He trained them vigorously
- Trained them to charge
What was Oliver Cromwells Army called?
The New Model Army (NMA)
How did the first war end?
The NMA took Oxford which lead Charles I to be desperate and he handed himself to the Scottish (hoping to turn them to his side) but they handed him to the parliament for a cash reward and Charles I was arrested.
