Abolitionists
People who were against slavery because it was a moral evil. Also people who wnted to get rid of slavery in the entire US.
Free Soilers
Did not like slavery, but not because they thought it was a moral evil bc it damaged there income since people who get paid work better.
Different then abolitionists bc they were not fully opposed to slavery and did not think it was a moral evil
Popular Sovereignty
Control by the people. It was the principle used by some states to decide if slavery would be allowed there.
Secession
To remove yourself from a country and become your own.
What the South wanted to do.
Have there own country seperate to the U.S
Ie. Brexit, N. Korea and S. Korea
Sectionalism
When a group or individual expresses alliegiance to a region or section rather to a country has a whole.
Fugitive Slave Law
Allowed the south to hire kidnappers to capture runaway s,aves or even kill them if they ran.

Compromise of 1850
Proposed by Henry Clay
- California became a free state
- made Utah and New Mexico a people would vote on slavery.
- Also led to the fugitive slave law.
- Ban sale of slaves in D.C (but not slavery)
- Texas would give up claims to New Mexico for 10 million.
Wilmot Provisa
Law to ban slavery in any territory won from mexico. The house passed it but the senate denied it so it never became a law.
Missouri compromise
Happened in 1820.
Proposed by Henry Clay
Allowed Missouri to become a slave on condition that maine would become a free state and other parts of the territory from the Louisiana purchase, north of 36 degrees lattitude would not become slave states.
Kansas Nebraska act
Happened in 1854
Steven Douglas said that slavery or no slavery would be decided by the popular sovereingty of kansas and nebraska. (This essentially negated the misouri comp.)
Mexican-American War
A war between Mexico and America which America won and they got Utah, New Mexico, and California (1846-1848)
Lincoln-Douglas Debates
A debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas
Happened in 1858
Douglas thought slavery should be voted on and Lincoln thought that slavery should not be a thing, but he thought they should be able to vote, but not be total equals.

Bleeding Kansas
Caused by John Brown
Happened in 1856
Happened because kansas was going to be voted on and the south and north sent in people to sway the vote and John Brown’s violent abolitionist started killing pro-slavery people in there sleep and the pro-slavery people fought back which caused it to be a mini war so it was named bleeding kansas.
