Class 1 Chemistry Flashcards
(27 cards)
Matter is?
Another word for all substances that make up our world.
Chemical is?
Substance that has the same composition and properties whatever it is found.
Observation
Observe, describe, measure
Hypothesis
Possible interpretation of observation
Experiment
Test to determine validate of hypothesis
Metric system
Measurement based on 10
Prefix attached to any unit increases or increases its size by a factor of 10.
Scientific notation
Consists of part: a Coefficient, a power of 10 and a unit of measurement.
Length
Centimeters, millimeters
Volume
Space Occupied by a substance
Mass
Amount of matter in an object
Density
Mass per unit volume, how much Volume a mass displaces
Measured in g/ml
Matter
Matter is everything that has mass and occupies space.
Matter is everywhere.
A substance is matter that has a fixed composition
Two types of pure substances
Element
Compound
Mixtures
Consisting of two or more different substances mixed together but not chemically combined
Homogeneous mixture
Solution composition of the substances are uniform
Heterogeneous mixture
Components are visible without uniform composition
Mixtures can be physically separated
.
States of matter
Solid-definite shape and volume particles are close together and rigid
Liquid-definite volume, no definite shape, particle slowly and randomly. Take shape of container
Gas- no shape or volume, particle are far away, have no attraction to each other, take shape of container
Physical
Characteristics that measured or observed without affecting the identity of the substance
Chemical
Does that describe the ability of a substance to change into a new substance
Physical change
Appearance changes but composition stays the same. Melting, boiling, freezing, condensing (all are water)
Temperature conversion
T(f)=1.8xT(c)+32
T(c)= T(f)-32/1.8
Element
Pure substance from which all other things are built. Elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
The Atom
All elements in the periodic table are made up of Atoms.
Adams are the smallest particle of an element
