nurses need to develop critical thinking skills in practice so that they can identify key problems, issues, and risks involved. apply the correct logic, in specific knowledge, skills and experience. It’s needed because nurses are supposed to use a systemic approach,
it helps solve problems by understanding the issue, analyzing , finding evidence for strategies, and soloutions, to find one final solution

- a process of thinking about patient issues, making inferences, and deciding on the action that’s going to be made for the situation

- focuses on defining patient problems and selecting appropriate information

2 components of sense-making

A

a) sense-making mode - engaging with the situation at hand, examining its different properties, constructing explanations that allow them to select the appropriate action
- active sense-making- new experiences DO NOT fit into preexisting sense-making
b)Habitual mode- allows an individual to utilize pre-existing mental models that reflect their life experiences shaped by psychological, social,cultural, and economic factors.
- default state- that individuals maintain and attempt to return to after engaging with sense making
Habitual Mode > Change > Sensemaking Mode > Habitual Mode
