Theory
a statement that tries to explain how facts or events are related
Social world
a dynamic organic system of interrelated and interdependent parts
Collective conscience
the set of shred beliefs, ideas, values, and moral attitudes which operate as a unifying force within society
Social facts
general features that exist on their own; independent of individual manifestations
Social solidarity
degree to which group members share beliefs, norms, and values (collective conscience) and the intensity and frequency of their interaction
Anomie
a feeling of disconnection from the moral rules (norms) of society; lack of clear goals/purpose
Dominant Ideology
the powerful promote their own interests at the expense of the weak
Dialectics
a way of seeing history and society as the result of oppositions; contradictions and tensions from which social change can emerge
Idealism
human mind & consciousness are more important in understanding the human condition that is the material world (Hegel)
Base
material & economic foundation for society; includes the forces & relations of production
Forces of production
human & physical, non-human inputs in production; the factories, machines, and tools used to produce wealth
Relations of production
social relationships (workers & owners) that people must enter into, in order to survive, to produce and reproduce their means of life
Superstructure
all of the things (values, beliefs, ideas) that society values and aspires to once its material needs are met (includes religion, politics, and law); ideas, ideology
Self-fulfilling prophecy
refers to how internalizing these feelings may lead us to become the kind of person we believe other see us as
