Classification Flashcards
The division of organisms into groups, or classes, based on specific characteristics.
Classification
The science of describing, naming, and classifying organisms.
Taxonomy
A classification of living organisms, which divides all organisms into 6, Bacteria, Protists, Fungi, Plants, and Animals.
Kingdom
A rank in classification between Kingdom 1st and Phylum
Phylum
A rank in Classification between Phylum 1 and Order 2.
Class
A rank in classification between Class 1 and Family 2.
Order
A rank in classification between Order 1 and Genus 2.
Family
A rank in classification between Family 1 and Species 2.
Genus
A rank in classification under Genus 1
Species
A kingdom made up of complex, multi-cellular organisms that lack cell walls, can usually move around, and quickly respond to their environment.
Animalia
A group of animals that have a tail, a Notochord (Backbone), Hollow Nerve Cord (Spinal Cord), and Pharyngeal Pouches (gills as the body matures.
Chordata
A group of animals that have fur, give live birth, and produce milk for their offspring.
Mammalia
A type of mammal characterized by opposable thumbs and binocular vision.
Primate
A type of primate characterized by bipedaslism, relatively long lower limbs, and lack if a tail; examples include humans and their ancestores.
Hominid
A Swedish botanist who founded for the biological naming and classification system.
Linnaeus
An aid that is used to identify organisms and that consists
of the answers to a series of questions.
Dichotomous Key
A group division of organisms that is above a kingdom in the system of classification, that is based on DNA similarities, rather than physical similarities, There are 3 ____ Archaea, Bacteria, and eukaryotes.
Domain
A kingdom made up of bacteria that live in extreme environments.
Archaebacteria
Single-celled organisms that can cause disease not a virus but ______.
Bacteria
A kingdom of mostly one-celled eukaryotic organisms that are different from plants, animals, bacteria, and fungi.
Protisa
A kingdom made up of nongreen, eukaryotic organisms that have no mean of movement, reproduce by using spores, and get food by breaking down substances in their surroundings and absorbing the nutrients.
Fungi
A kingdom made up of complex, multicellular organisms that are usually green, have cell walls made of cellulose, cannot move around, and use the sun’s energy to make sugar by photosynthesis.
