Classification Flashcards
(20 cards)
Classification
The process of classifying something according to their qualities or characteristics.
Taxonomy
a scheme of classifications.
Binomial Nomenclature
2 terms used to denote a species of living organisms, first indicating the genus and the second indicating the epithet.
Taxon
a taxonomic group of any rank, such as species, class, or family.
Genus
A principal taxonomic category that ranks above species and below family.
Family
an order of classification, placed between order and family. Can be divided into subfamilies.
Order
Classification used for organisms by the nomenclature code.
Class
A taxon in the ranks
Phylum
a principal taxonomic category that ranks above class and below kingdom
Division
refers to a rank equivalent to phylum
Kingdom
5 kingdoms, classified above a phylum, one widely accepted system of classification
Domain
“superkingdom” or “empire” highest rank of taxonomy, three different domain systems
Phylogeny
a branch of biology dealing with phylogenisis
Characters
An observation or trait of something
Molecular Clock
the average rate at which a species’ genome accumulates mutations, used to measure their evolutionary divergence and in other calculations
Cladistics
a method of classification of animals and plants according to the proportion of measurable characteristics that they have in common.
Cladogram
a branching diagram showing the cladistic relationship between a number of species.
Archaea
Bacteria
Protists
of eukaryotic organisms that are unicellular and sometimes colonial or less often multicellular and that typically include the protozoans, most algae, and often some fungi
Fungus
any of a group of unicellular, multicellular, or syncytial spore-producing organisms feeding on organic matter, including molds, yeast, mushrooms, and toadstools.
