Classification of Matter Flashcards
(19 cards)
Matter
Matter is made up of mass and volume
Mass
The amount of matter an object contains.
Elements
Elements are found on the Periodic Table of Elements.
Compounds
A substance in which there are 2 or more atoms that are combined in fixed porportions.
Mixtures
Mixtures are made up of two or more substances that can be separated.
Heterogeneous mixture
A mixture in which different materials can be distinguished
(Pizza, chocalate chip cookies, yogurt parfaits, etc.)
Homogeneous mixtures
A mixture in which two or more gaseous, liquid, or solid substances are blended evenly
*You can’t tell the materials apart (soda, air, water, ect.)
Physical properties
Any characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the identity of the substances
Physical change
A type of change in which a new substance is NOT formed.
Chemical properties
-characteristics of a substance that indicates it can change chemically
Chemical change
-a change of one substance into another
Solution
A homogenous mixture of particles so small they cannot be seen with a microscope and do not settle
Suspension
A heterogeneous mixture in which visible particles settle.
Colloid
A type of mixture with particles that are larger but still do not settle.
Adhesion
Adhesion causes two different materials to stick together.
Cohesion
-the action of sticking together
Tyndall effect
-light bouncing off the larger particles
Condensation
- the process by which water vapor (water in its gas form) turns into liquid
Evaporation
-when a liquid changes into a gas
