classification of matter Flashcards
(23 cards)
What is matter?
Anything with mass and volume
Matter is the physical substance that occupies space and has mass.
Define pure substances.
One type of matter
Pure substances can be elements or compounds.
What are compounds?
Two or more different elements combined
Examples include H2O, CO2, NaCl, and copper sulfate.
What are elements?
Cannot be chemically broken down to simpler substances
Examples of elements include O, N, C, and H.
Define mixtures.
Two or more types of matter
Components in mixtures keep their identity.
What is a homogeneous mixture?
Solutions with components blended (uniform appearance)
Examples include tea, juice, and Gatorade.
What are solutions?
Components blended where solvent dissolves solute
Examples include sugar in water and saltwater.
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
Mechanical mixtures where all components are visible
Examples include oil & water, salad, and pizza with various toppings.
Define mechanical mixtures.
All components visible (two or more phases)
Examples include trail mix and whole milk.
What are suspensions?
Heterogeneous mixtures where particles settle over time
Examples include tomato juice and orange juice with pulp.
What is an atom?
The smallest unit of matter that can take part in a chemical change
Atoms consist of protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Moleculer a cluster of two or more atoms
bonded together
- the atoms in a morecule can be the same
(molecure of an element) or different (molecure
of a compound)
- Note: moleculas stay the same regardless
of their state (solid
liquid
nave the same chemical formula
- Eg of molecules:
• NO2 = compouna
• N 2
= element
