Classification of Matter Flashcards
Describe matter and its composition.
Property
Characteristic that allows us to recognize a particular type of matter and to distinguish it from other types.
Element
Pure substance that cannot be broken into simpler substances because it is composed of only one type of atom.
Arrangement
Order
Homogenous
Uniform (having the same properties) in every part.
Heterogenous
With different properties in different parts.
Phase
Any sample or part of a sample that is homogenous.
Physical property
A property that can be observed without destroying or creating any substances.
Atom
The smallest piece into which matter can be subdivided while still retaining its distinguishing properties.
Substance
Matter that has distinct properties and a composition that does not vary from sample to sample.
Mixture
Multiple substances mixed together.
Density
Mass (in kilograms) per cubic metre.
State
Form (solid, liquid, or gas) of matter.
Viscosity
How thick a liquid is; “runny” liquids like water are less viscous, while “sticky” liquids like syrup are more viscous.
Solubility
Maximum mass (in grams) of a solid that can dissolve in 100 ml of a liquid.
Malleability
Ability of a solid to be hammered into and keep a new shape without breaking.
Ductile
Ability of a solid to be drawn into a thin wire.
Aqueous
Dissolved in water.
Continuous
Able to be any value.
Discrete
Able to be only certain values.
Dissolve
Mix two phases to form one new homogenous phase.
Compound
Pure substance that can be broken into simpler substances by breaking apart the atoms.
Boil
Turn from a liquid into a gas by heating until bubbling.
Evaporate
Slowly turn from a liquid into a gas without heating.
Freeze
Turn from a liquid into a solid.
