Classification Of Research Flashcards
What is basic Research
Basic Research is a research aimed to add to existing knowledge, and it leads to generalisation, principles and the development of theories thereby extending the frontiers of knowledge. It may not have practical applications but will be useful in the future.
What is applied research
Applied research is a scientific study that seeks to solve practical problems or used to find solutions to everyday problems
What are the sub divisions of applied research
Action research
Evaluation research
Market research
Research and development
Investigative research
What is action research
Action research involves providing solutions to a local problem. It involves developing skill and finding answers to solve problems of current concern
What is evaluation research
Evaluation research is research aimed at assessing programmes and services with a view to improving their efficiency by making necessary visions or modifications.
What is Market Research?
Market research is the systematic and objective search for, and analysis of of information relevant to the identification and solution to problems associated with Marketing of products and services.
Investigative research
Used by researchers, including journalists, social scientists and others that is intended to unearth secret, hidden or obscure information that can build a more comprehensive picture of the issue under investigation.
Conceptual research
Conceptual research involves some abstract ideas and theories especially the use of logic, reasoning, intelligence and intuitions by researchers, philosophers and thinkers to develop new concepts or interprete existing ones.
Is conceptual research subjective or objective
Subjective
What are the procedures for research framework
- Choose the topic for your research
- Collect relevant in literature
- Identify specific variables
- Generate the framework
- Conceptual model
Empirical research
This is data-based research which involves formulating research questions and testing Hypothesis, and arriving at facts that can be verifiable experiment or observation.
What is qualitative research
A research study that makes use of data genetics through interviews, observations, documentary sources, audio and visual materials along others
Quantitative research
Data is expressed in numerical values which usually involves hypothetical formulation and testing in order to arrive at statements of theory and valid conclusions.
Quantitative data are analysed using either
Descriptive or inferential statistics
Experimental research
This both quantitative and qualitative. It is mostly used to study cause and effects relationships between and among variables on a studied subject .
Analytical research
This type of research uses facts and information already available, such as documents and records , analyse, and then make a critical evaluation of the material.
Bibliometrics
Bibliometrics is formally known as statistical bibliography, it is related to both scientometrics(study of the quantitative aspects of science as a discipline or economic activity) and informetrics(study of the quantitative aspects of information in any form).
Pritchard(1969) defined bibliometrics as
Applications of mathematics and statistical methods to book and other media of information.
Citation analysis
This is an aspect of bibliometrics.
This is the analysis of references listed at the end of a document.
What are the 3 major citation analysis tools
Google scholar
Web of science(Wos)
Scopes
Altemetrics
Is the creation and study of new metric based on the social web for analysis and informing scholarship.
Altemetrics is a developing field that seeks to supplement the traditional forms of citation.
Content analysis
This is a technique for making inferences by objectively and systematically identifying specified characteristics of documents.
Descriptive research
Uses descriptions, classifications, measurements and comparison to describe what phenomena are.
Descriptive research includes
Survey
Correlational
Case studies
Causal-comparative
Historical
Longitudinal
Cross sectional
