Classifying Work and Energy Flashcards
(30 cards)
Work
is a change in state of a system caused by a force applied along a displacement.
Positive work
provide e.g.
When force and displacement are in the same direction
e.g. pushing a book
Negative work
provide e.g.
Force and displacement are in opposite direction
e.g. swimming
No work
provide e.g
Force and displacement are perpendicular to each other
e.g. holding a book and walking.
Work done on the system
When an external force exerted by an object on the system is on the direction of the system’s displacement
Work done by the system
if the system exerts a force on an external object in the direction of the object’s displacement.
Work Equations
W= fdcos0
Si unit of work
n x m or J
Calculating total work?
Add all the work (include positive and negative sign)
Pressure
is the magnitude of the perpendicular component of a force per unit area.
Pressure equation
P= F/A
Is pressure victor or scalar
Scalar
An equation between pressure and work
Work done in an isobaric process equation
W= P dlta V
Isobaric Process
a thermodynamic process in which pressure remains constant
Energy defintions
is a quantitative property of a system that is associated with the motion of particles and the relative positions of particles
Kinetic energy
is the energy associated with the object’s motion.
linear kinetic
An object with velocity that is moving through space
Another name for linear kinetic energy
translational kinetic energy
Linear kinetic energy equation
1/2 m v^2
angular kinetic energy
Kinetic energy associated with the stationary objects rotating about an axis.
Another name for angular kinetic energy
rotational kinetic energy
total kinetic nergy
the sum of angular kinetic energy and linear kinetic energy
Thermal energy
the kinetic energy in the random motion of particles that make up an object
Work energy theorem
states that the total work done on a system is equal to the change in the system’s kinetic energy
