What is an Accredited Institution?
A registered private educational institution that meets standards of integrity and competence.
What does Admission mean?
Being allowed into an institution, faculty or program once you meet the entrance requirements.
What is an Apprenticeship?
A training program that provides on-the-job training with in-school instruction. To qualify, you must be employed in a trade area and be registered with through your employer.
What is a Baccalaureate?
A bachelor’s degree.
What is a Bachelor’s Degree?
A credential awarded after 4 years (typically) of full-time study at universities, colleges, or some institutes.
What is a Calendar in an academic context?
An annual publication, issued by post-secondary institutions providing information regarding academic regulations, programs, courses, grading, etc.
Example: course selection.
What is a career + Technical Program?
Two-year programs providing applied training for specific employment.
What is a Certificate?
The credential associated with education or training programs involving 1 year or less of study.
What does Co-Op stand for?
An education program that combines classroom learning with semesters of paid practical work experience.
What is a Degree?
An academic credential awarded by a university or college for successfully completing a 3-4 year program of study.
What is a Diploma?
A credential issued to a student who has successfully completed a program that is usually not less than 2 academic years of full-time study.
What are Graduate Studies?
Advanced university programs available to qualified individuals who have already acquired a degree.
Example: law school, med school.
What is a Major?
In universities, the specialization in one discipline, usually during the 3rd and 4th years of study.
What are Masters or Doctorate degrees?
University degrees beyond the undergraduate level; awarded upon completion of an additional 2-4 years of study at a university.
What does Post-Secondary mean?
A term meaning an institution offered ‘after high school’, as in post-secondary education (e.g. college, university).
What is a Practicum?
The portion of a course which is made up of practical work experience in the relevant field of study.
Example: Professional Development Program-teacher.
What is a Pre-requisite?
Requirements that must be met before students may register in a particular course.
