Climate Flashcards
(39 cards)
Evaporation
is a process in which a substance of a liquid state changes into a gaseous state due to an increase in temperature or pressure
Condensation
water that collects as droplets on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it or the conversion of a vapor or gas to a liquid
Precipitation
Precipitation is rain, snow, sleet, or hail — any kind of weather condition where something’s falling from the sky
Submilition
a substance from a solid state directly transform into a gaseous state skipping the liquid state
Transpiration
Transpiration is the process of water movement through a plant and its evaporation from aerial parts, such as leaves, stems and flowers
Percolation
Percolation happens when liquid is strained through a filter, like when someone makes coffee.
Run Off
Surface runoff is water, from rain, snowmelt, or other sources, that flows over the land surface, and is a major component of the water cycle
Water Reservoirs
A natural or artificial place where water is stored
Carbon
A naturally abundant, nonmetallic element that occurs in all organic compounds and can be found in all known forms of life
Atmosphere
The blanket of gas on the surface of a planet or satellite
Biosphere
The parts of the land, sea, and atmosphere in which organisms are able to live
Geosphere/lithosphere
The geosphere is the collective name for the lithosphere, the hydrosphere, the cryosphere, and the atmosphere.
Hydrosphere
the total amount of water on a planet.
Carbon Dioxide
Carbon dioxide is a colorless, odorless gas found in our atmosphere. Its chemical formula is CO2
Cellular Respiration
the process of breaking sugar into a form that the cell can use as energy. This happens in all forms of life.
Photosynthesis
the process by which plants and other things make food.
Decomposition - The separation of a substance into simpler substances or basic elements or the process of decaying or rotting
Sedimentation
any particulate matter that can be transported by fluid flow and which eventually is deposited as a layer of solid particles on the bed or bottom of a body of water or other liquid.
Weather
the state of the air and atmosphere at a particular time and place : the temperature and other outside conditions such as rain, cloudiness, etc.
Climate
prevailing weather conditions of a region, as temperature, air pressure, humidity, precipitation, sunshine, cloudiness, and winds, throughout the year, averaged over a series of years.
Altitude
The height of an object or structure above a reference level, usually above sea level or the Earth’s surface
Latitude
A measure of relative position north or south on the Earth’s surface, measured in degrees from the equator
Temperature
a measure of how hot or cold something is; specifically, a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object, which is a type of energy associated with motion
Thermal expansion of water
one of the primary causes of the rising sea levels on earth.
Greenhouse Gases
a warming of Earth’s surface and the air above it. It is caused by gases in the air that trap energy from the sun
