CLIMATE Flashcards
(11 cards)
Weather vs climate
Weather = day to day Climate = over a long period of time
Frontal precipitation
When a warm and cold front hit each other, warm rises and falls as percip
Convection precipitation
When 2 warm fronts hit each other they both rise and fall as percip
Relief precipitation (western cordillera)
Hot moist air from the Pacific rises over the mountain, cools at the top and falls as percip
Continental vs maritime
Continental = far from water Maritime = near water
Latitude
The location of an area relative to the equator
Ocean Currents
The temp of an ocean current effects the temp of the air above it
Wind + Air Masses
An air masses temp and moisture depend on where it is created (over land, on water, cold, warm)
Elevation (BC)
Higher = cooler because air can’t hold heat when it expands at high altitude due to low air pressure
Relief (BC)
One side of the mountain (west / windward) is hit by moist warm air so receives cool percip FIX
Near Water
Near water = low temp range and high percip
Far from water = high temp range and low percip
