climate change Flashcards
(7 cards)
Greenhouse gases
greenhouse gases absorb and emit long wave (infrared) radiation, thereby trapping and holding heat within the atmosphere
greenhouse gasses with the largest warming effect
1) water vapour
2) carbon dioxide
two factors that determine the warming impact the greenhouse effect will have
1) ability to absorb long wave length radiation (larger=warmer)
2) concentration within atmosphere (larger=warmer)
greenhouse effect
the greenhouse effect is a natural process whereby the atmosphere behaves like a greenhouse to trap and retain heat
increasing factors of greenhouse gases
- Deforstation
- increased farming/agriculture
- combusted fossil fuels
- increased reliance on fossil fuels
effects of an increased greenhouse gas
- more frequent extreme weather conditions
- areas more drought effected
- changes of circulating ocean currents
threats to corral reefs
threats to coral reefs from increasing concentrations of dissolved carbon dioxide
