Climate Change Flashcards

(22 cards)

1
Q

Tree rings

A

Each ring shows a year of
growth. Changes in shape
and size of tree rings can
show conditions during that
year.

Q

Ice cores

A

The ice contains bubbles of the air
from each year. Scientists analyse the
bubbles in each layer to see how
much CO2 they contain.

Q

Historical sources

A

Old photos, drawings, written records, diaries and the records of
dates at regular intervals e.g. the harvests, the arrival of migrating
birds and tree blossom. Can also be used.

Q

Vansishing islands

A

The IPCC predict sea levels could rise between 9 and 88cm causing small islands like the Maldives to sink and go under water.

Q

Extreme weather around the world

A

More than 130 severe flood warnings (indicating a threat to life) were issued in the first
 three months
of 2014. In contrast, there were only nine in the whole of 2012

Q

Declining Arctic sea ice

A

Both the extent and thickness of
Arctic sea ice has declined rapidly
over the last several decades

7
Q

Enhanced green house effect

A

1) Shortwave solar radiation passes through the atmosphere
2) Long wave solar radiation is reflected back by the earth
3) Some long wave radiation is absorbed and re emitted by greenhouse molecules in the atmosphere. This warms the earths surface and lower atmosphere.

Q

Co2

A

There is also lots of smoke and Co2 being released into the atmosphere from factories.

Q

Carbon footprints

A

Carbon footprints are little profiles of you and the way you live and how much Co2 YOU emit into the atmosphere.

16
Q

What is renewable energy

A

Is energy which comes from energy sources which wont run out.

17
Q

What are 3 examples of renewable energy.

A

Solar energy, wind energy and HEP

18
Q

How can we use tree rings for seeing the age of trees.

A

Each ring shows a year of growth.Changes in shape
and size of tree rings can
show conditions during that
year.
Warmer and wetter
weather can show greater
growth as the tree ring is
bigger, cooler or drier
weather can mean rings are
thinner.

19
Q

Ice cores

A

Ice contains bubbles of air from each year. If you analyse the bubbles you can see how much Co2they contain.

20
Q

Historical sources

A

Old images and paintings can also show the change in climate and temperature over the years.

21
Q

Vanishing islands

A

The IPCC predicts that sea levels could rise between 9 and 88cm in next century. This would threaten low islands such as the Maldives.

22
Q

Extreme weather around the world.

A

More than 10 severe flood warnings were issued in the first 3 months pf 2014.
