climate exam part 4 Flashcards
(7 cards)
what is the main source of Earth’s energy?
solar radiation/sunlight
what is the difference between weather and climate?
weather: day to day conditions of atmosphere in area over short period of time
climate:average weather patterns in an area over a long period of time
what is specific heat capacity?
the amount of energy needed to raise the temp of 1 kg of a substance by 1 degree
what is the difference between having high and low heat capacity?
high: substance requires more energy and takes longer to heat and cool but stores more heat energy
low: substance requires less energy and can heat and cool quick but stores less energy
What is Albedo?
a measure of how much solar radiation is reflected back into space by a surface
How does water affect the creation of seasons and climate?
-ocean currents distribute heat globally
-water vapor is a greenhouse gas that helps retain heat
what has the most and least impact on the creation of seasons and climate?
most:
-earths tilt
-distance from equator
-ocean currents
least:
-elevation
-vegetation
