Climate Science Flashcards
(18 cards)
How do you calculate the power of a wind turbine?
By multiplying the voltage by the current
What is the unit of measurement for power?
Milliwatts
What is the unit of measurement for current?
Milliamps
What is the unit of measurement for voltage?
Volts
What is correct for all greenhouse gases?
They are molecules with 3 or more atoms
Which type of radiation is most associated with the greenhouse effect?
Infrared radiation
Which processes contribute to increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere?
Deforestation, burring of fossil fuels and increased use of farmland for ruminant animals
How much carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels have been absorbed by the ocean?
About 50%
As the atmosphere and ocean warms, what is the effect on the amount of CO2 that can be absorbed by the ocean?
The amount of CO2 that can be absorbed is reduced
What effects does hydrogen ions in the water reducing the amount of carbonate ions that shellfish need have?
It means there are fewer and smaller shellfish and fewer fish in the ocean
Why is the amount of shellfish in the ocean important to the human population?
Large numbers of people depend on them as a food source and livelihood
Why can’t the ocean readily adapt to the increased acidity?
It is happening too rapidly
Name four different greenhouse gases?
Water vapour, methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide
What is the Greenhouse Effect?
The process where some of the infrared radiation emitted by the Earth’s surface is trapped by greenhouse gases, which helps moderate the the temperatures and enable life to evolve on the Earth
Why is the Greenhouse Effect the main contributor to current global warming?
Because we have been emitting more greenhouse gases recently from factories which burn fossil fuels
What is infrared radiation?
It is a type of radiant energy that’s invisible to human eyes but that we can feel as heat
What is renewable energy?
Energy from a source that is not depleted and naturally replenished in a human lifetime when used, such as wind or solar energy
Order the electromagnetic spectrum from longest to shortest wavelength?
Radio, microwave, infrared, visible light, X-ray, gamma
