Climates and Biomes Flashcards
(12 cards)
Biome
A biome is a large area of the world with a certain type of climate, plants, and animals.
Weather
Weather is what’s happening in the atmosphere right now or over a short period of time in a specific place.
Climate
Climate is the average weather in a place over a long period of time usually 30 years or more.
It tells you what kind of weather you can usually expect in a place, not just day to day, but season after season and year after year.
Climate zones
Climate zones are areas of the Earth that have similar long-term weather patterns, including temperature, rainfall, and seasons. These zones help us understand and describe the different types of climates around the world.
Longitude
Longitude is a way to describe how far a place is east or west of the Prime Meridian, which is an imaginary line running from the North Pole to the South Pole through Greenwich, England.
Latitude
Latitude is a way to measure how far a place is north or south of the Equator—an imaginary line that circles the Earth halfway between the North and South Poles.
precipitation
Precipitation is any form of water that falls from the sky to the ground.
Continental
A continental climate is a type of climate found in areas that are far from oceans or large bodies of water.
Dry
Dry means there is very little water or moisture.
Tropical
Tropical refers to a climate or region that is near the equator and is usually warm or hot all year round with lots of rain.
Polar
Polar refers to regions near the Earth’s North and South Poles that are very cold most of the year.
Temperate
Temperate refers to a climate or region that has moderate temperatures—not too hot and not too cold—and usually has four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn (fall), and winter.
