augmentative and alternative communication
Articulation disorder
a disorder that impacts the production of speech sounds
(occurs when someone does not acquire speech sounds by the expected age)
Phonological Processing Disorders
a disorder that impacts the way speech sounds function within a language
(occurs when there is an impairment in the phonological representation of speech sounds and speech segment)
Dysarthria
characterized by weakness and incoordination in the muscles that control respiration, phonation, resonation, and articulation
Apraxia
a deficit in the neural motor planning or programming of the articulatory muscles for voluntary movements for speech, in the absence of muscular weakness
Childhood apraxia syndrome
have trouble controlling their lips, jaws and tongues when speaking. the brain has trouble planning for speech movement.
lisp
a disruption in the pattern of producing /s/; whereas typically the lingual movement protrudes between the teeth
(characterized by airflow stopping OR lateralized distortion of the sound)
tongue thrust
abnormal tongue rest posture, pushing forward and/or interdental, or lateral posterior, which does not allow for normal resting relationship between tongue, teeth, and jaws.
fluency
refers to continuity, smoothness, rate, and effort in speech production.
cleft palate
congenital structural anomalies caused by atypical embryological development
autism
developmental disorder that appears in different forms with varying levels of severity
(atypical comm., language development, eye contact, and sensory experiences)
aphasia
language disorder caused by damage in specific area of the brain that controls language expression and comprehension. person is unable to communicate effectively. EFFECTS ALL MODALITIES OF LANGUAGE
traumatic brain injury TBI
occurs when there is a sudden, external, physical assault that damages the brain.
