Section 1. Introduction
Go over introuction to male genetalia exam
- Give name, ststus
- Check pt name, DOB
Section 2. Explanation
Go over exaplanation fo the examination to the patient
Explain:
* “Would like to examine and await verbal consent
* Inform that chaperone is present for examination, check that fine
* Ask pt to remove undergarments (before they lay down)
* Position pt supine, abdo and genetalia exposed (maintain dignity by covering with sheeting before and after examination
Section 3: Inpsection
Go over Inpsection of male gentalia
- Pubic hair distribution
** Scrotal skin: **rashes/nodules
** Scrotal contours: **swellings, scars, veins (varicocele)
*** Urethral meatus: **presence/absence foreskin, meatus stenosis/ hypospadias. Foreskin probelms? (phimosis, paraphymosis)
* Glans penis: infallmation (balanitis), warts, ulcers (STIs), tumours (discrete, irregular red lesion)
Section 4: Palpation
Go over plapation of male genetalia exam
Before palpation, ask if any discomfort (if present, examine side with no discomfort first)
Examine each testicle seperately
- Testis: note size, consistency, texture, abnormal masses
- Epididymis: nodules/swellings/added tenderness
- Spermatic cord: varicocele
What should you do if you detect a scrotal swelling?
- Swelling seperate from testis/involves testis
- Can feel above swelling?
- Swelling reducable/fluctuant/solid? Cough impulse?
- Swelling transmulinate?
What is a normal testis size?
16 cc
What are the 4 main features to note during prostatic examination?
Prostate:
Size
• Surface texture (rough vs smooth)
• Consistency (soft vs firm)
• Presence or absence of tenderness
