Clouds, Chapter 3 Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is water vapor?
Water in its gaseous state
How do clouds form?
Water vapor condensed into tiny water droplets around small particles. Warm air is forced upward, expands, and cools
What are ice crystals?
Frozen water droplets
How are ice crystals made?
Water frozen on particles of dust. Forms in the high atmosphere.
What type of cloud is a cumulus cloud
Fluffy white cloud
Where do cumulus clouds form?
High in the atmosphere
What type of cloud is a stratus cloud?
layers of smooth sheets of clouds with low altitude
Where are stratus clouds formed?
In fair weather
,What type of clouds is a cirrus cloud?
Appear fibrous or curly
Thin,White, feathery
Made of ice crystals
How do cirrus clouds form?
Fair weather or approaching storms
How are clouds classified?
Shape,Height,Temperature,Pressure
What prefixes are used to describe cloud height?
Cirro/High
Alto/Middle
Strato/Low
What does the term nimbus mean?
Rain or snow cloud
What is dew point?
Temp air needs to be cooled in order to become saturated with water vapor
What is evaporation?
Sun heaters up and collects water. Turners into steam, goes into the atmosphere
What is precipitation?
Form of water that falls to the earths surface when clouds get to heavy.
What is fog?
Form of water that falls to the earths surface when cloud gets to heavy.
What i relative humidity?
Tells us how much water vapor is in the air
How do molecules in hot water move compared to cold water?
Move faster
What is collection?
When precipitation falls to a place and it starts to collect
What is condensation?
How clouds form
What are the 5 climate systems?
Atmosphere, Lithosphere, Cryosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere
Why are the poles closer then the equator?
The poles are farther away from the un
What is acid rain?
Polluted precipitation
