Call light
A bedside button that a resident can push, and it will alert a nurse that help is needed.
Cancer
A disease caused by an uncontrolled division of cells in one or multiple parts of the body.
Cardiac Arrest
Sudden, unexpected loss of heart function, breathing, and consciousness.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
An emergency procedure that combines chest compressions often with artificial ventilation in an effort to manually preserve brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest.
Cardiovascular System
The system that moves blood throughout the body, and is composed of the heart, arteries, capillaries, and veins. This system transports oxygenated blood from the lungs and heart throughout the body via the arteries.
Care Impaired
When a person has trouble remembering, learning new things, concentrating, or making decisions that affect their everyday life.
Care Plan
A nursing care plan provides direction on the type of nursing care the individual/family/community may need. The main focus of a nursing care plan is to help others reach their highest potentials and goals.
Care Planning
The process of assessing an individual’s health, social risks and needs to determine the level and type of support required to meet those needs and objectives, and to achieve potential outcomes.
Cast
A shell, frequently made from plaster or fiberglass, that encases a limb, to stabilize and hold a broken bone in place until healing is confirmed.
Cataract
Clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye.
Catheter
A flexible tube inserted through a narrow opening into a body cavity, particularly the bladder, for removing fluid.
Catheter Care
Wash the catheter well using cooled, boiled water and a mild liquid soap. Rinse well with cooled, boiled water to remove all traces of soap. Flick the catheter dry. Avoid touching the end which goes into your urethra.
CC’s in an ounce
30 cc’s or ml’s in one ounce.
Central Nervous System
The complex of nerve tissues that controls the activities of the body. It is composed of the brain and spinal cord.
Chain of Command
In the means of communicating and making decisions.
Charge Nurse
Charge nurses focus only on nurses who work in their unit during their shift, and are mostly focused on nursing-related tasks.
Chemical Disinfection
Chemical substances which are used to kill or deactivate pathogenic microorganisms. Examples are: Chlorine and bleach.
Chemical Restraint
A form of medical restraint in which a drug is used to restrict the freedom or movement of a patient or in some cases to sedate the patient.
Chemotherapy
A type of cancer treatment that uses one or more anti-cancer drugs as part of a standardized chemotherapy regimen. Chemotherapy may be given with a curative intent, or it may aim to prolong life or to reduce symptoms.
Choking
Inability to breathe caused by a blockage in the throat or windpipe.
Chronic
Chronic condition, a condition or disease that is persistent or otherwise long-lasting in its effects.
Circulation
The movement of fluid through the body in a regular or circuitous course. The circulatory system, composed of the heart and blood vessels, functions to produce circulation.
Circulatory System
The system that circulates blood and lymph through the body, consisting of the heart, blood vessels, blood, lymph, and the lymphatic vessels and glands.
Cleaning
The process of removing unwanted substances, such as dirt, infectious agents, and other impurities, from an object or environment.
